N2  - The marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is an endemic lizard of the Galapagos archipelago and is classified as vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN. Of the 13 main islands upon which Amblyrhynchus occurs, the smallest number is found on San Cristobal. Though genetic effective population sizes (Ne) are known to be alarmingly small, aviable censussize estimates lack precision. We report the results of a mark-recapture study on San Cristobal Island performed in 2013, where we focussed on two of the largest colonies (SRL and SRPB), one for each of the genetically separate populations that occur there. Utilising the Lincoln-Petersen index, we estimate the abundance of marine iguanas to be 411 (95% CI: 362-461) at SRL and 183 (95% CI: 156-211) at SRPB. These estimates confirm the small estimates obtained through use of molecular methods, and further underscore the need for careful monitoring and management of these highly threatened populations
