It focuses on the effects on the structure and function of the system rather than on damage to individuals or populations caused by specific chemicals. Attention is drawn to community structure, diversity, nutrient cycling, litter decomposition and similar parameters. A number of case histories of aquatic, marine and terrestrial systems are given, including some of systems which have been damaged or are on their way to recovery.
