This books surveys current knowledge of the effects of man-made chemicals and other disturbances on whole ecosystems, concentrating on effects at the ecosystem level. It focuses on the effects on the structure and function of the system rather than on damage to individuals or populations caused by specific chemicals. Attention is drawn to community structure, diversity, nutrient cycling, litter decomposition and similar parameters. A number of case histories of aquatic, marine and terrestrial systems are given, including some of systems which have been damaged or are on their way to recovery. This is in order to throw light upon the deterioration process, as it may progress through similar stages in reverse order. The question of detectability of change is also examined.
