Summary, etc. Philornis downsi (Figure 3-1) is a parasitic fly (Diptera: Muscidae) that was first recorded in the Galápagos archipelago in 1964 where it likely invaded from mainland Ecuador (Bulgarella et al. 2015). Philornis downsi poses a major threat to the passerine fauna of the Galápagos Islands due to the way in which its larvae feed. Adult females lay their eggs in bird nests, and first-instar larvae feed in the nares of nestlings while the second and third instars feed on nestlings externally by rasping at the skin and ingesting blood and fluid from the wounds, causing death or deformity of nestlings (Figure 3-2) (Fessl et al., 2006a).
