No bird extinction has ever taken place in the Galapagos Islands since the arrival of humans in 1535. However, some endemic land bird populations are now declining in number, in part due to an introduced parasitic fly, Philornis downsi. This fly was first recorded in the Galapagos Islands in the 1960s, but its negative impact on birds was only discovered in the 1990s (Causton et al., 2006). Adult
